Vitamins

William asks…

Are these vitamins healthy? Acai & herbal weight loss?

okay, so a friend of mine takes these two vitamins, Acai and Herbal Weight Loss. Shes lost about 10 lbs in the past 3 weeks, she looks great and said she feels great, like not worn out or anything.

So, im off to the health food store tomorrow to get them and try them out(:

…But i thought id some on here and ask about them first, cause they just seem too good to be true!

thanks for any comments(:

admin answers:

If you buy acai berry from GNC at your local mall, GNC’s web site or your local grocer, it certainly won’t hurt. They should be as safe as blueberries. If you buy acai berry from an internet site, it almost is guaranteed NOT to be safe:

1. Acai berries sold on the internet are grown in 3rd world countries that use pesticides in the fields and chemicals during processing.
2. Most internet acai berry sites are scams that really want to get your credit card number for a “free trial” but then they empty your credit card account.

So if you buy acai berry from a local store, no problem. If you buy acai berry from the internet, I’d worry if I were you.

What would be a good weight loss regimen for a 5’3 woman with a bmi of 34?

I know about the exercises and stuff, and about portion control. But what supplements should I take? My thyroid is a little low so I was thinking about taking the vitamin shoppe brand thyroid sp-26, solgar’s herbal diuretic, and irwin naturals oolong and matcha tea capsules.

Any other recommendations? I know its not that healthy to take all of that at once, but I need to drop 60+ pounds by January next year for my wedding. I need something that will help me drop it fast and that I can taper off later. I don’t need to hear preaching about how bad it is, I already know. My mom is a nutritionist and is driving me up the wall. But I know my metabolism just doesn’t work that fast. But its not slow enough to get on prescribed medication. I already cut out most salt and sugars and I drink a gallon or more of water a day. I go for three walks a day about a mile each time in the stroller or on my bike with my daughter. And I’m eating fist sized portions. In two months I have lost three freakin pounds, and now because of water weight on my period I just gained it back. I’m very frustrated and discouraged. So please no preaching, I’m desperate…

I’ve heard of something called synthroid? Not sure what it is or how expensive.

It doesn’t sound like you’re doing much strength training. Maybe adding that element in with your aerobic activity will make a little bit of difference?

Questions about spinach?

5)What is spinach composed of? (vitamins, minerals, etc.)

6)What pigments does the plant of spinach have? (State their names and the colors that they show)

7)Under what conditions do the spinach plants grow in? (cold or hot temperatures, how much water is needed, etc.)

8)What is an Rf value? What does it stand for?

9)How do you calculate the Rf value of a pigment?

10)Why is the Rf value important for scientists?

admin answers:

5) What is spinach composed of? (vitamins, minerals, etc.)
Vitamins: Vitamin A, Beta Carotene, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Pyridoxine, Folate, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K. Minerals: Calcium, Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorous, Potassium, Selenium, Sodium, Zinc.

6) What pigments does the plant of spinach have? (State their names and the colors that they show)
Chlorophyll (green), Xanthophyll (yellow), Carotenoids (orange), and Anthocyanins (red).

7) Under what conditions do the spinach plants grow in? (cold or hot temperatures, how much water is needed, etc.)
Temperature: Germination, 45-75F; Growth, 60-65 F. Spinach plants will germinate in cool soils (32° F to 40° F) and grow quickly in these conditions. Water: Regular irrigation. Keep soil moist, but avoid overwatering. Do not let plants wilt.. Spinach should have very fertile, well-drained soil that holds moisture readily. This will assure the fast growth needed for crisp, tender leaves. The pH should be close to neutral 6.5-7. Acid-type soils should be limed.

8) What is an Rf value? What does it stand for?
In chromatography, the Rf value is the ratio of how far the solute (the substance you’re subjecting to chromatography) traveled versus how far the solvent traveled. Rf stands for “retardation factor” or “retention factor”.

9) How do you calculate the Rf value of a pigment?

The Rf value is calculated through division, the dividend being the distance traveled by the compound and the divisor being the distance traveled by the solvent front.

10) Why is the Rf value important for scientists?

The Rf value can provide corroborating evidence when determining what a previously unidentified compound might be. The Rf value allows scientists to study what is contained in a mixture, for example when analyzing the constituents of the pigments making up chlorophyll.

Michael asks…

Why does the vitamin and mineral content of spinach increase when it is boiled?

For instance, vitamin A content increases from 56% DV to 377% DV when cooked! Also, folate content increases from 15% DV to 66% DV. Practically all of the vitamins and minerals present in spinach increases when it goes from raw to cooked. You can compare the nutrition facts between raw and cooked spinach here:

Raw spinach: http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/vegetables-and-vegetable-products/2626/2
Cooked spinach:

Oh, and it’s not that the serving sizes are different. I set them both to 1 cup.

Any explanations for this?

admin answers:

I think danielle is correct but i think that the iron content becomes lower if you cook it. I can’t remember all tho ….

Laura asks…

A question about raw fruit and veg?

I know raw fruit & veg in general is extremely healthy. And nuts & seeds also.

But what foods in particular have been scientifically proven to be especially high in vitamins, minerals or any other beneficial quality. For example spinach

A list of foods and the benefits would be great….

Thanks

admin answers:

Tomatoes, Spinach, Almonds, Hazlenuts, Hemp Seeds, Pumkin Seeds, Sunflower Seeds, Flax, Alfalfa Seeds (in fact any seeds – sprouted), Brocolli, all beans, berries.

All green veggies.

Go easy on the fruit because of the sugar content.

You can’t go from with that lot – which is by no means an exclusive list, but enough to get you started.

Daniel asks…

what are the several illnesses that have been trace to the toxicity of water soluble vitamins?

admin answers:

OD from water soluable vitamins are rare because your body will extract what it doesnt use in your urine. But too much vitamin C can give you diarhea. It isnt bad for you though, except for the accompanied dehydration. Some people even use a vitamin c detox plan where they inflict this on themselves. Your question is somewhat unclear, is this what you were asking about?

Donald asks…

why is risk of toxicity greater with fat-soluble vitamins A & D than water soluble vitamins in general?

admin answers:

Water soluble vitamins are excreted by the body easily and need daily replenishment. The fat soluble vitamins are not used everyday so they’re stored in the liver and fatty tissues, are eliminated much more slowly than the others, accumulate in the body and megadoses can lead to toxicity.

Ken asks…

Which of the following is NOT among the features of the fat-soluble vitamins?

A) Can be stored in the liver and adipose tissue.
B) Absorbed directly into the vascular (blood) system.
C) Found in the fat and oily parts of foods.
D) Pose a greater risk for developing a toxicity than water-soluble vitamins.

admin answers:

The answer is B. Only water-soluble vitamins are absorbed directly into the bloodstream.
